A New Type of Farming

Rooftop Garden

Nothing tastes better than home-farmed produce. For those of us who reside in a rural or suburban setting, planting and tending our own garden is a feasible feat. For those of us, however, who happen to live in the city, gardening is a less popular pastime, simply because there is not enough space on the ground for these green havens. There is, of course, space in the air. Rooftop farming became popular in Hong Kong in the 2000s, and the practice has recently spread to the United States. It makes a lot of sense: utilize the dead space on the roof of your building to grow vegetables that you can eat and sell, saving and making money in the process. Plus, these veggies are guaranteed to be better for you than their store-bought counterparts, since you can have 100% confidence in the way that they are grown (no pesticides, etc.). Beyond the benefit to your health, you help reduce carbon emissions by lowering your contribution to long-range transportation of produce for sale. There are even organizations that have made this rooftop gardening into a business; “City Farm” is 10,000-square-foot roof that houses 400 growing boxes. “City Farm” rents out these boxes to community members for a fee of $20-25 per month, a fair price considering how much money you can save from participating in rooftop gardening.

So, no matter where you live, you can still supplement your healthy diet, help reduce carbon emissions, and save money, all at the same time. All you have to do is start a vegetable garden. Happy gardening, everyone!
